Author Chris Pike's debut novel Unexpected World is a gritty and compelling survival tale about human courage and steadfast determination to live, to endure, and to persevere against all odds. Assistant District Attorney Dillon Stockdale is on the phone with his daughter when an EMP obliterates the entire electrical grid of the United States. Anything relying on a computer is fried, including the plane his daughter is on. Gripped with the terrifying realization the plane has crash-landed somewhere in the expansive and dangerous landscape of Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin, Dillon sets out to rescue her before it's too late. A harrowing survival story with non-stop, pulse-pounding action, Unexpected World is a story of good vs. evil, of a complex narrative of fight or flight, and mind-bending choices resulting in profound consequences. Dillon Stockdale is determined, he's well-equipped, and nothing will stop him. Or will it?

Unexpected World The EMP Survivor Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Chris Pike Kevin Pierce Books Reviews
Note I never give books 5 stars because I have never read the perfect book
I only found a couple of minor spelling/grammar mistakes in the book. They weren't such that they broke my train of reading and I probably wouldn't have noticed them other than they came at time when I was just starting to read at the location they were at. Had I been involved in reading the story I doubt I would have noticed them.
This is a fun, easy reading, book with a good story.
I have not previously read any other books by this author, but will be reading the rest of the series. I purchased the book based on all of the positive comments on the DD12 FaceBook page.
The primary characters are well developed, and as I like, they are not described to you at the beginning of the book, but rather, you learn about them as the book goes much the same way you would learn about a person in real life. The secondary characters are not as well developed, but since they do not play a major role in this book (I expect they will in subsequent books) that is not an issue.
The main characters are different from many other books in this genre. They are common everyday people with some clue as to what is happening and what to do, but they are not the super soldier, uber prepper with unlimited funds who has purchased every single item they will need for the next 100 years living in a bunker that is impervious to the bad guys.
Unlike many other books in this genre, the characters are more typical of what I would expect real life people to be, and act more like I would expect people to. Again, no super soldier prepper with unlimited funds doing unbelievable things. This is becoming more normal for books in this genre, and to me that is a good thing.
The book follows a fairly typical path, but one that is realistic. The characters are not typical in their occupations and knowledge which is refreshing.
There are what I would consider 3 threads running through this book. They are not done in a manner that leaves you wondering how they are connected or what you are reading about, but rather flow together nicely. 2 of the story lines are somewhat separate but related, while the 3rd is linked into 1 of the other 2 (the main one in this book) and gives what I expect to be a foreshadowing of what is to come in the next books in the series.
This book does not necessarily "finish" the storylines as you would expect, but the main thread is complete and you are not left with a book that will force you to purchase the next book, just to finish the 1st story.
Some of the parts of the story are predictable and a little obvious if you have read this genre before, but not so much that you want to put the book down because you have already read this story. That being said, the author does a good job of holding your interest and deviating enough that you are left wondering if what you expect is actually what is going to happen.
This book has enough details to set the image for the reader and to enable the reader to understand what is necessary for the story, but not so many mundane details that they overwhelm the story. This is not one of those books where the author throws in a lot of extra details that are not needed just to fill pages, or to try and prove that they know what they are writing by including details about every product the characters may see or use.
This book is a story, not a "survival" or "prepping book" that pretends to be a story by loosely and disjointly trying to weave a story around product descriptions or survival techniques.
I do not remember a lot of gratuitous violence or language in this book. That does not mean there wasn't any violence or foul language, but if there was, it came across as natural to the situation and wasn't so over-the-top that it made me stop and wonder why it was in there.
Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a fun, easy and enjoyable read that keeps your interest throughout the book.
This book was the author's first and as such, contained some errors. Not enough to be "off-putting" but the author definitely needs a good proofreader. The book was very interesting, but not near as well developed as William Forstchen's "One Second After" and his sequels. I am reading Pike's second book now because I am a "survivor" novel nut. I noticed from 's pages, there are several series such as these either on the market or coming up. Super. I'm having surgery which is going to keep me down for about 6 weeks - I'll have plenty to keep me occupied!
I'm interested in the story so even I can't figure out why I chose to give this only 3 stars....
I guess it's the so so part. which are spoilers....
It feels like the author perhaps put a bit of his own personality into Dillion... and the author is obviously a gun enthusiast. Now I have nothing against guns, have my own ccl as well but there is WAY too much time and details about guns in the story. My eyes just kind of glazed over after 8000 gun, ammo and gun specific tools descriptions.
Then Dillion seems like a male chauvinist at times but is supposedly a "gentleman". Talks about women doing the kitchen work and things like that. Enough for me to notice and enough to grate on my nerves.
Add to that he's a strong, military man and a prepper. He's supposedly ready for the sthtf, his love interest is possibly DYING from blood poisoning and he decides to get her LIPSTICK!?
The story itself, premise, setup is good. Editing for an indy book (my book preference) isn't horrible. I just wish it had been edited for character consistency as well as content and then it would have been at least 4 stars.
I just finished reading your Unexpected World. I love your writing style. The story moved along and I enjoyed the characters you have developed. I was hoping Cassie's best friend would survive. The interaction between Dillon and Holly is very reealistic.I really enjoyed Unexpected World and look forward to the next book. Thanks so much for writing it.
This is book one in the EMP series by Chris Pike. I have recently read books 1-4 and my understanding is that there will be a book 5 in 2018. I rarely start a series until most of the books have been printed and I wanted to provide that information for others who feel as I do. The book starts off fast and provides information on the main characters from the beginning. For an independent author, Chris writes well and provides good character development. The story takes place in East/South Texas and Louisiana. Chris is familiar with this area and her writing is true to the landscape. Chris is also very knowledgeable about firearms and goes into great detail when writing about this. I have little knowledge of firearms other than knowing the difference between a gun and a rifle. I tended to skip over this information but I know that this information is important to many readers. I won’t give you a synopsis of the story as there are many reviews that do that already. In my opinion, the book is well written, flows well and has plenty of action, and is well researched.
With indie authors sometimes you don't know what your are going to get. I was pleasantly surprised by this book and enjoyed it very much. The author did a great job of telling the story with out over telling it and getting into the details that didn't really matter to the overall story. While there were a few instance of repetitive information it didn't take away from the story. I would highly recommend this book and am looking forward to the next book.
The character development is great, and I have really enjoyed the storyline. A great beginning captures you and it is hard to put the book down. You will learn a lot of what it means to survive and what new skills you must develop. So, read, enjoy, learn and save some more food.
